Best Youth Crossbow – Get Them In A Stand Early!

So if you happened to read my “About Me” page, you will see that I have 2 boys that are following in my footsteps and really enjoying hunting and the outdoors. Being from PA, you can legally start hunting at the age of 12. But a Tristan Crossbowfew years back, they passed the mentoring program. This actually will allow a child under the age of 12 to get out there in the woods, with a licensed father, grandfather, brother, or friend with a few rules to follow.

1. Must purchase a Mentored Youth Hunting Permit (for $2.90).

2. The youth must be accompanied by a licensed hunter, 21 years or older.

3. Only one weapon may be with the 2 hunters and the mentee must carry the weapon while moving.

4. Once at your spot, the mentor can hold the weapon but the mentee must be within arms length.

Archery Season! Great Time To Cut Your Teeth!

Both of my kids actually participated in the “Mentored Youth Hunting Program”. And it was an awesome experience. But, when archery season started, neither of my kids could pull back a compound bow with enough power and speed to kill a deer. This is when I became a fan of crossbows! A crossbow allowed my kids to get out in the woods at a young age of 8 to 10 years old AND have an opportunity to harvest a deer!

Quality time with my kids in the outdoors. The ability to teach my kids, hands on, not just at the kitchen table during dinner, but in an actual real life hunting situation, in a stand or blind!

And the first crossbow each of my kids learned with was the Barnett RC150.  This was a great bow that I bought at a sporting goods store for under $100!

The Best Youth Crossbow!

Even though both my kids are now old enough, and strong enough to use a compound bow, and they do most the time, sometimes they will still take out their Barnett Crossbow. The Barnett RC 150, in which both my boys basically learned to archery hunt with is still hanging in the garage. They have since upgraded. Now they both use the Barnett Recruit Terrain Crossbow! You really cannot go wrong with this crossbow for the price and for what you get out of the gate!

More Expensive Does Not Mean Better!

One of the reasons I believe this is the best youth crossbow; the best bow for any young or new hunter to start out with, is the bang you get for your Buck! No pun intended!

For ~$250 dollars, you or your young hunter are ready to rock! And this is no toy bow! Barnett makes some of the best crossbows on the market and this “starter package crossbow” will sling bolts (arrows) at 330 feet per second! Check out some of the details and all that is included below:

  • 330 feet per second. Draw weight: 140 lbs Kinetic energy: 91.9 ft lbs
  • Overall weight 6.4 lbs | axle to axle 16.125″ | dimensions 34.25″L x 18.25″W
  • Ships mostly assembled.
  • Anti-Vibration Foot Stirrup
  • Trigger Tech Technology with 3lb zero-creep release. All stainless steel components.
  • Nock sensor and adf eliminate dry fires
  • Includes: 4×32 scope, rope cocking device, lightweight quiver, two 20 inch Headhunter arrows, lube wax (we suggest you lube strings every 10 shots).

You are getting everything you need in a crossbow to start hunting immediately. What I put in bold above is what sold me at first. You’re not just paying for the bow. You also get the bolts, a scope, and quiver! Obviously, you need to site it in for yourself or your young hunter before you actually get out there, but I will say it is fairly accurate right out of the box! After 1 or 2 days of practicing with a target, you will be shooting 2 to 3-inch groups up to 30 or 40 yards!   And you will need to purchase some crossbow broadheads to actaully start hunting game, but that is it!

You Can’t Go Wrong!

Like I’ve said in previous posts, I’m not just touting products here. I only recommend products that I, my children, or my trusted hunting buddies have or have had experience with. I can honestly say you will not be disappointed in this crossbow!

The most important thing is getting your kids, loved ones, or friends out there in the woods. Share the love of hunting with our youth and allow our sport of hunting to continue to grow and get more popular year after year!

I hope you enjoyed this post and I hope you try to encourage our youth and newbies of all ages to the sport of hunting.  And this crossbow will help you get them out there!

Yours in Hunting,

Spence
